Broadband 2020

Second in a series with that theme, Broadband 2020 aims to take stock of progress to date toward pervasive broadband connectivity and the steps needed to take to achieve measurable and world-leading levels of broadband-for-all by the year 2020. Distinguished speakers and panelists will describe the many dimensions of the challenge: technology, services, economics and policy, and will help calibrate progress in the implementation of the national broadband plan. The symposium comes at a time when broadband has been recognized as one of the nation's imperatives and much attention is being paid to the best possible use of broadband resources and stimulus funds.

The audience will include thought leaders and practitioners from academia and industry as well as students, and the symposium will highlight the importance of public-private partnership in accomplishing the formidable goals of Broadband 2020.

Co-sponsored by the Georgia Tech School of Public Policy and the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute, the Innovations in Economic Development Forum brings together faculty, other researchers, students, economic developers, and policymakers to discuss leading-edge ideas and practices in economic development and innovation policy. Established in 2004, the Forum meets three to four times per semester at Georgia Tech, usually in Technology Square. The Forum is free and open to the public.

Sonic Generator Performance

On September 9 and 10 at 8 pm, Georgia Tech’s contemporary music ensemble Sonic Generator will perform in the Atlanta premiere of Maá—an evening-length performance at Atlanta Symphony Hall.

In this first-of-its-kind collaboration among Sonic Generator, contemporary dance troupe gloATL and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano, the audience will be immersed into a panoramic, grass-covered landscape with a 360-degree experience of music, dance and theatrical design. Seating is limited—tickets may be purchased at the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office at 404.733.5000 or online.

Maá is an original interpretation of the renowned Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s music composition of the same name, which translates to “earth.” Saariaho’s work blends the use of electronics and traditional instruments and is marked by its emphasis on timbre; Maá is widely considered to be among her most important compositions.

The Atlanta Drupal User Group (ADUG) is proud to announce this year's 3rd Annual Drupalcamp Atlanta. On Saturday, October 1, we’ll hold our all-day Drupalcamp with keynote speaker, breakout sessions and Birds of Feather groups at the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

Drupal is a popular, free open-source modular framework and content management system (CMS) written in the programming language PHP. Drupalcamp Atlanta is an attendee-driven, completely volunteer initiative modeled after the open, participatory nature of barcamps. Invent Now Collegiate Inventors Competition

For the last twenty-one years the Collegiate Inventors Competition has recognized and honored student inventors whose inventions one day could make significant contributions to society. This year over $75,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winning undergraduate and graduate students and their advisors. 

 The deadline for the 2011 Competition is June 24.   Entries are judged on their originality, their potential impact on society, and the level of student initiative.    Expert judges select up to 12 finalists who receive an all-expense paid trip to the final judging round and awards ceremony in Washington D.C., held in the fall.  National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees participate in the final round of judging and have included Thomas Fogarty, inventor of the balloon embolectomy catheter; George Smith, 2009 Nobel Prize recipient and inventor of the charge-coupled device; and James West, inventor of the electret microphone.
